When a new dishwasher is delivered, we often get these two questions: Why was the dishwasher leaking when it was delivered? And why does the inside of the dishwasher smell musty?

I can assure you that this is completely normal and can be fixed.

Most, if not all dishwashers, are tested before they are boxed up. Some water is left behind in the dishwasher to keep the gears lubricated.

After the dishwasher is manufactured and boxed up, it is stored in the manufacturer’s warehouse until it is picked up. After it arrives at a distribution center, it sits and waits to be sold to a dealer, where it will wait some more in the store until the customer is ready for delivery. With this combination of water in a sealed dishwasher and time between purchase and delivery, it will often arrive with a musty smell.

As I said above, this is all normal and nothing to be concerned about. What I recommend is to use a dishwasher cleaning agent such as Dishwasher Magic, which we sell for $6.95, or Miele’s Conditioning Agent for $12.95. You just plop it in through one of the top rack tines (prongs) and run a rinse cycle without any dishes or glasses. The cleaning agent will clean and condition the tub and clear out the musty smell.

Now you can enjoy your new dishwasher without any worries.
