As the Jewish Holiday Passover approaches I thought I would highlight appliance brands that have the Sabbath Mode in both cooking appliances and refrigerators, to compliment a suite of matching appliances. This will be helpful for those who are looking to upgrade their appliances with both design and function in mind while meeting strict religious regulations. Most manufacturers offer Sabbath Mode in ovens and ranges but there are fewer matching refrigerator models available.

What is Sabbath Mode you ask? Wikipedia’s definition: Sabbath mode, also known as Shabbos mode (Ashkenazi pronunciation) or Shabbat mode, is a feature in many modern home appliances, including ovens and refrigerators, which is intended to allow the appliances to be used (subject to various constraints) by Shabbat-observant Jews on the Shabbat and Jewish holidays.

Shabbat Observant Jews are forbidden from doing creative work on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Observant Jews interpret this to include doing things such as preparing food, making a fire, manipulating electricity, or even pressing an electronic button. This is where the necessity for Sabbath mode comes into play.

Today’s ovens automatically shut off after a while because of safety and efficiency reasons, so you could not leave it on from the day before. But with Sabbath mode, the shutoff timer is overridden and all lights and displays should be disabled. If it’s a refrigerator, all lights and electrical activity will be disabled when the door is open. This mode allows observant Jews to use their appliances on the Shabbat and during Jewish holidays.

Look for appliances that are certified as Sabbath-and holiday-compliant by Star-K Kosher Certification

So I did a little research about Sabbath mode and came across the website Star-K Online. You will find just about everything you can imagine about the world of Kosher on their site including appliances and pre-purchase advice. They make it easy for me to help customers not only looking for the Shabbat Mode in cooking appliances but I can see which brands have a matching refrigerator.

I found out that the “Sabbath Mode” was developed by KitchenAid (manufactured by Whirlpool) who approached the Star-K to consult and help modify their ovens so they can be used on Shabbat and Jewish holidays back in 1997. In 1998 Whirlpool was awarded a patent for this concept.

Here are the brands we recommend that offer both cooking appliances and refrigerators with a Sabbath Mode option:
