Hi, it’s Debbie Schaeffer, CEO of Mrs G, and I’m here to share a tip to help make your next over-the-range microwave purchase easy and stress free with no surprises. One of the best tips when purchasing a new appliance is to take some basic measurements before leaving the house. This will save you time and make your whole shopping experience much easier. So if you’re looking to replace your OTR Microwave, make sure to follow these steps before you begin shopping. All you need is measuring tape, a smart phone, and a helper to get started.
Taking a picture of your current over-the-range microwave is a good way to make your next purchase easy and stress free. Take pictures of the microwave as well as the measurements so you won’t have to write anything down. Have your helper snap a photo as you take each measurement. Measure the width of the cabinet around the existing microwave. Then measure the height of the cabinet opening. If the existing microwave sticks out past the cabinet then take a picture of that as well. Lastly, measure from the cooking surface to the underside of the microwave. Also, if possible, take a picture of the model number which is normally on the inside of the microwave.
If there is any backsplash tile, take a picture and document if it stops at the microwave or continues behind it. You don’t want to end up with a shorter microwave that would result in a gap between the backsplash and the microwave.
Next, check if your over-the-range microwave is recirculating or venting to the outside. First check for a vertical vent in the cabinet above the microwave. If you don’t see one there then look on the exterior of the house for a damper vent that might indicate the microwave is venting directly from the back. If you don’t see either of these then your microwave may be recirculating.
